Scenarios

From Hearts of Iron 3 Wiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

Scenarios are bookmarks that focus on a certain timeframe and region of the map. When starting a game, only certain countries can be selected, and the Options menu is disabled. Regions outside the focus of the scenario are inaccessible and are covered by a black screen.

Each scenario has a start and an end date, as well as unique Victory Conditions that are vastly different from historical starts. If all victory conditions are achieved before the end date, the scenario ends in victory. On the other hand, if the end date is reached without achieving all the conditions, the scenario will end in defeat.

The orders of battle (OOBs) are also different from historical starts. Only playable countries and a few non-player countries that are relevant to the scenario will have their OOBs loaded.

The interface tabs (Diplomacy, Production etc.) are disabled. While new units cannot be produced, some scenarios will have events that spawn reinforcements in the capital.

Spanish Civil war

Fearing where the radical ruling party was taking the nation, reactionary elements of the army launch a coup to seize power in Spain. However, all does not go to plan and the Government retains control of more than half the country. A bloody war is now the only way to reunify the nation.

Our defeat here condemns our nation to the misrule of Communists and Anarchists. The unified state of Spain and the Church are doomed.

Our defeat here means a Fascist victory. Doubtlessly, Franco will join the rising powers of Italy and Germany, leading Spain into a doomed war against the remaining powers in Europe.

The Winter war

After the signing of the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact, the occupation of the Baltic states and Eastern Poland, the USSR turned their attention onto their tiny neighbour, Finland. Expecting another round of easy expansion, the Soviets were instead shocked when their army initially proved woefully under-prepared for battles with the dug-in Finish[sic] troops. While this war may end in Russian victory, it will not be an easy fight.

Desert Fox

The Western Desert Campaign was a continuous back-and-forth struggle. The initial Italian invasion of Egypt failed when the British counter-attacked, pushed deep into Libya, and captured huge numbers of Italian prisioners[sic]. Only the intervention of German troops, lead[sic] by General Erwin Rommel, prevented a total rout. Axis forces would twice more launch large-scale assaults against the Allies, each time pushing the Allied forces back to Egypt, but both times the Allies retaliated and regained the ground lost. On the second (and final) Axis push, the Allies were driven far into Egypt; however, the Allies recovered at El Alamein and then managed to drive the Axis forces west and completely out of Libya.

Victory!

With our great victory, the Italian Mediterranean Empire is once again taking shape. Egypt is once again in our hands, allowing us to retake our East African colonies and push the British entirely out of the Middle East.

[Rome reborn!]

Victory!

With the Axis kicked out of Africa our convoys can once again pass through the Mediterranean, avoiding the long route around Africa. Our next step will be the invasion of Sicily, Italian morale is low after their defeat here, an invasion of their home soil may well force them out of the war.

[To the soft underbelly of the Axis!]

Disaster!

The Allies are supreme in Africa and Italy stands open to invasion. Morale is at an all time low due to our unending string of embarassing[sic] defeats. Public support for the war is ebbing and there is open talk of coups and peace.

[At least the trains run on time]

Disaster!

With the loss of the Suez canal[sic] the fates of all our Mediterranean holdings have been sealed. The string of Axis victories is leading previously neuteral[sic] nations to lean further towards the Axis camp, and already we are hearing worrisome noises from Spain and Turkey.

[Try to keep a stiff upper lip]

Southern Conquests

The Allies and the USA hoped to end Japan's war with China by embargoing sales of vital war materials to them. Instead, on the 7th of December 1941, the Empire of Japan declared war on both the Allies and the then neutral USA. The key objective was to capture the economically vital Southern Resource Area, most importantly Malaya and the Dutch East Indies.

Victory!

We have gained control of the resources so vitally needed to keep our warmachine running. With these in hand our Fleet will soon sent[sic] the remainder of the American Fleet to the bottom of the ocean, after which they will have no choice but to accept peace on our terms.

[Excellent!]

Victory!

The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour is a day that will live in not only Infamy, but Stupidity too. While their initial attack achived a devastating victory, their invasions in the Pacific have met with crushing defeat. Once their oil reserves run out they will be totally defencless[sic], and they will have no choice but to surrender.

[That wasn't so bad]

Disaster!

By failing to gain control of the vital resources in this area you have doomed the Japanese Empire. Soon our Fleet will no longer be able to sail and our fighters will no longer be able to guard our airspaces. The Emperor is very disapointed[sic] with you.

[There is only one way to purge this dishonour...]

Disaster!

The Japanese have launched a lighting[sic]-fast series of invasions, and now control much of what they refer to as the "Southern resource area". But the war is not over. In the USA, an ever-growing war economy is churning out weapons and supplies, planes and tanks, and most importantly, a new fleet. However, for now we have to cut our losses and abandon Northern Africa to the Axis. Our troops will be shipped east to protect Australia and New Zeeland[sic] from further Japanese advances. Losing the Mediterranean will be painful, but the invasion of our Commonwealth cannot be borne.

[Japan's turn will come]

Fall Blau

Fall Blau (Case Blue) was the German code name for their 1942 summer offensive in southern Russia. Started on June 28th it initially enjoyed stunning success, but it ended in the crushing defeat of 6th army at Stalingrad and the whole of Army Group A was in very real danger of being cut off and destroyed by the Soviet counter-attack.

Victory!

Now that the Baku oilfields are under our control our fuel problems will be a thing of the past, while those of the USSR will be greatly increased. The loss of Stalingrad has also dealt a severe blow to Stalin's prestige. With these advantages the fall of the USSR cannot be far off.

[Moscow will be next!]

Victory!

The latest German attack has been thwarted and our armies are preparing to counter-attack with all haste. These facist[sic] agressors[sic] will soon regret invading the Motherland!

[Break out the vodka!]

Disaster!

The failure of our offensive gives the USSR still more time to recover from their initial losses, and they will likely soon launch a counter-attack. This war is likely to be a long one now.

[I'm sure next year will go better]

Disaster!

Our failure to stop the latest German offensive will have dire consequences for our defence of Moscow come spring.

[Break out the vodka]

Battle of the Bulge

The Battle of the Bulge, also known as the Ardennes Offensive, was the last major German offensive of WWII. The goal was to drive to the coast, then encircle and destroy the Allied armies in Belgium in the hopes that this would force the Allies to make peace so German forces could be concentrated in the east. Launched on the 16th of December 1944 the attack achieved almost total surprise, and poor weather prevented the Allies from making use of their vastly superior air forces. However, despite inital[sic] success, fierce resistance slowed until the Allies were able to counter-attack and improving weather allowed them to make full use of their air power. The failure of the attack left Germany without enough troops to defend their western borders and hastened the Allied advance into Germany.

With the German attack stopped cold they are wide open for a counter-offensive. Their reserves are spent, their airforce destroyed, and their morale has been shattered. Already our armies are preparing to cross into Germany, while in the East the Soviets are making steady progress with their own Offensive.

[Excellent!]

Victory!

Our victory here has convinced the Allies that fighting on the continent will simply cost too many lives and that a negotiated peace is the only solution. With our forces free to conentrate[sic] on the Russians we will doubtlessly soon crush their armies and push them back beyond the Urals.

[Excellent!]

Disaster!

Our defeat here has convinced the Allies that fighting on the continent will simply cost too many lives and that a negotiated peace is the only solution. We can only hope that the USSR enjoys greater success in their war.

[Bitter defeat]

Disaster!

Our defeat here has sealed the fate of Germany. Our losses cannot be replaced and we no longer have the forces needed to defend our western borders. Without reinforcement our armies in the east cannot stop the Soviets constant attacks. Defeat is certain, it only remains to be seen which of our enemies will reach Berlin first.

[Bitter defeat]

Operation Unthinkable

Britain had originally gone to war to aid Poland, but as WWII drew to a close in Europe Poland was occupied by the Soviet army and controlled by a communist puppet government. Unthinkable was an operation proposed by Winston Churchill wherein the Western Allies would attack the USSR and ensure a free Poland.

Victory!

The Iron curtain has been lifted from Europe and Poland stands free once again!

Victory!

The Communists are defeated and democracy is restored to Eastern Europe.

[We should lend everyone money now...]

Victory!

The Capitalist invaders have been defeated, just like the Fascists before them. So much is clear now, the poor quality of supplies sent, the delay in opening a second front, our so called[sic] allies must have hoped that we would bleed ourselves white[sic] fighting the Germans so we would be unable to fight back when they betrayed us, but the glorious Red Army has defeated them all!

[For the Motherland, Honour and Freedom!]

Disaster!

Poland remains under Communist rule, and now almost all of Europe is in the same state: Occupied by a now hostile USSR.

[Maybe we should have thought about this more]

Disaster!

The Communists have defeated us and the UK is the last bastion of democracy in Europe.

[Back to America then]

Disaster!

The Capitalist dogs have defeated us with their treacherous attack. While, of course, they are unable to invade the Motherland itself, we have been forced to return Poland's eastern border to its pre-war position. However, a 5-year plan to rebuild is being put into action even now, and work progresses to unlock the secrets of the American's super-bomb. Once our plans are complete the west will regret their betraying us. But you will not see this, Comrade, Stalin is a bit upset with your performance, and so you will be taking a little trip...

[See you in Siberia!]
